Adventure Ride & Info Weekend

Adventure Ride & Info Weekend

23rd & 24th April 2016

The VSM Adventure Ride & Information Weekend is over for another year, and by all reports a great weekend was had by all!

This is what we got up to...

  • Saturday morning 23rd April, riders to arrive at VSM at 259 Byron Street, Inverell.
  • During Saturday morning there will be various trade displays.
  • Leo Cash from Link International will be on hand to discuss Pirelli Tyres and Motul Oil Products.
  • We will have a large display from Andy Strapz luggage and accessories and we are hoping to convince a few other suppliers to make the trek to Inverell.
  • As always VSM staff will be available to showcase and discuss any of your adventure touring needs.
  • UPDATE: There will be prizes for the best "adventurised" DR650 & DR-Z400!

Saturday early afternoon the “Afternoon Delight” loop is an interesting 110km local ride mainly minor roads and dirt back tracks, about 2 hours. This is not a led ride but an easy navigation course downloaded from the Dual Sport Australia CD ROM (this will be supplied to riders at $35, it is volume 3 and has around 2000kms of fully route charted back roads and other information).

From 6.00 pm folks should start to gather at the RIVERSIDE RESTAURANT AND FUNCTION CENTRE for a 6.30 pm dinner.***

This could very well be the highlight of the weekend with a great meal and our amazing guest speakers, ED ORDYNSKI and DANIELLE MURDOCH.
Click on the links to read a bit about their adventures!

  • The dinner will be a roast dinner and dessert, at a cost of $34.
  • We ask that you please make payment for your meal prior to the day so that we are able to provide firm numbers for catering. Payment can be made at the bottom of this page.
  • Both Danielle and Ed are donating their time to share some of their amazing experiences with us.
  • They have made this amazing opportunity available to us because we are officially aiming to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
  • VSM will have a collection box at the door and we hope everyone can see their way clear to provide support for an organisation that provides a mantle of safety over a great deal of the riding area we adventure riders trek, please feel generous!
  • For a map of Inverell please click on the Riverside Restaurant link. The restaurant is in a central location and within walking distance to most motels. Inverell has a reliable taxi service as well if you don't want to drive on the night.

Gather at VSM for departure on the main loop to the south of Inverell from around 7.00am.
This loop is about 300 or 400 kms depending on which detour is taken two thirds of the way around.

  • The course is part of the Dual Sport Australia CD ROM #3 (the CD has around 1800kms of back roads and advice), these discs are $35 and it is recommended to use it as there is no arrowing and riders are navigating the course using their own resources.
  • Quite a few people will already have this CD from the last VSM ride where we used a Northern loop.
  • If you are in a group you will need someone who has the maps, if you are on your own it is essential to have the maps.
  • The route should be loaded to a GPS prior to coming or you can print the route chart out. Martyn Blake of Dualsport Australia will be in attendance but “tech support” will be limited.

  • This should be a great weekend, with Monday being ANZAC Day there is less pressure for attendees to hurry home on Sunday evening. There will be ANZAC Day services in Inverell for anyone wishing to attend a dawn service or an ANZAC Day march.
  • VSM has no cover charge on anything and the Dual Sport CD ROM is not compulsory (but highly recommended).
  • The Riverside Restaurant has not applied any charge for the function hall and there is a bar in the facility.
  • Danielle Murdoch and Ed Ordynski are providing their time at no charge.
  • This no charge stuff is all due to the understanding of the importance of making a donation to the RFDS.
  • The staff of Vince Strang Motorcycles and all the people helping out are looking forward to making a great weekend for everyone.
  • All bikes are welcome

On the ANZAC Day long weekend of April 23 and 24 we’ll leave from Vince Strang Motorcycles at 259 Byron St, Inverell, to ride another loop from the latest DualSport Australia disc.

With a similar format to last year’s first VSM Adventure Day – where we rode a loop from Dualsport Australia’s Great Ride series Volume 3 North-west NSW – there’ll be a trade show Saturday morning showcasing the latest in adventure product, including the new Honda Africa Twin. New, additional trails will extend Saturday afternoon’s delight loop to around 100km, and Sunday’s loop to Barraba and back offers either 408km, or 312km with the optional shortcut.

Fuel won’t be an issue with only 130km between fuels.

Although we had no complaints about Vince’s cooking last time, with Barraba having a choice of eateries for lunch, dropping the BBQ frees Vince up to ride along with us.

Vince is also organising a Saturday-night get together with guest speakers, a chance to socialise and more.

The best part is it’s still only $35.00, which includes Dualsport Australia’s Great Rides series Volume 3. The disc includes the weekend’s course, plus another 1500km of premium adventure trails to Killarney in Queensland.

What’s that? You came last time and already have Volume 3? Or you’ve already bought a copy?

You can swap for either Volume 1 or Volume 2 or ride for free.

You’ll still have to pre-register and get your purchase of Volume 3 confirmed (which is easy, we know who you are) and come enjoy the ride.

Sunday’s loop is a ball-tearer. There’s a bit of transport (both dirt and tar) to get started, but then the fun really starts with an undulating roller-coaster style of narrow, granite roads snaking through farmland and spectacular valleys into Barraba for lunch. It’s a lot tighter compared to last year’s loop, with lots of elevation changes.

Tight grass tracks through paddocks feature leaving Barraba, then more, tighter, undulating, granite-laced roads with turns just over rises keep you on your toes.

There’ll be the option of taking the 45km of tar back from Bundarra to Inverell saving 100km and at least two hours, but the hardy souls who continue will be rewarded with fine New England scenery, rich in colour, glowing in its Autumn splendour and more fine, dirt, backroad riding.

Here’s a handy accommodation link helping with bike-friendly accommodation.

To register or order your copy of Great Rides, phone (02) 6721 0610 or you can order from the website.

We’ll be closing entries a couple of weeks before the event, or when our quota of riders is filled, to allow the mail-out of Volume 3 and so you can get your GPS loaded and route sheets dialled. You can even join Volume 1 and Volume 2 to Volume 3 and use the course to ride to Inverell. Make a week of it!

There’ll be limited GPS loading available Saturday morning, but you’d be best to have it sorted before arrival.

*** PLEASE NOTE *** You will need to purchase Dualsport Australia’s Great Rides series Volume 3 in order to ride. The disc includes the weekend’s course, plus another 1500km of premium adventure trails to Killarney in Queensland. If you have previously purchased the disc you can ride for free.

*** PLEASE NOTE *** All bikes MUST be registered and in road-worthy condition.
